W10 - When the going gets tough, the tough gets going: How to control stress before it controls you

Dr Lee Boon Ooi

As an educator, you may experience stress when you are unable to cope with demanding tasks like managing student behavior in class, attending to their socio-emotional needs etc. On top of these, you may also experience personal life stressors related to family and other matters. Although a certain degree of stress is normal and sometimes necessary to keep you on your toes, too much stress can actually be harmful to your physical and mental health, as well as to your relationships with your students and loved ones.

In this workshop, you will gain insight into the nature and function of stress, its origins and symptoms, as well as its impact on you as an educator. Based on this understanding, you will be trained to cope with daily stressors that you face in life. Via a series of experiential and interactive activities, you will pick up a variety of coping methods, such as cognitive and relaxation techniques. You will learn to match these coping methods to the type of stressors that you are likely to encounter in your professional and personal life. By controlling stress before it controls you, you will be able to thrive and flourish in a tough environment, for when the going gets tough, the tough gets going!
