‘It’s not how smart you are, but how you are smart’. This idea refers to Howard Gardner’s theory of multiple intelligences, of which the most basic assumption is that every child has intelligence capacities, and we have the ability to enhance and amplify the intelligences. This workshop will look at the fundamentals of Howard Gardner’s theory as well as some of the implications for the classroom. In addition, it will help teachers find out their own MI profiles so that they are aware of their own areas of strength and weaknesses. Finally, it will help teachers expand their teaching repertoire so that they can plan and conduct lessons that incorporate different intelligences into a learning experience. Such a MI lesson would have something for every child thus allowing every child to be involved actively in the lesson rather than be passive recipients of information. It also has the added advantage of allowing students to learn the same material in different ways, thus aiding recall as well as understanding. Last but not least, such an approach allows teachers to reach out to every child, especially the non-traditional learner, and help her learn using her areas of strength.
